Puerto Morelos is a half-hour drive south of Cancun's airport. I'm told it's the last community on the Mayan Riviera to succumb to the tourism boom. Yes, there are clusters of pink condominiums stretching up the coast and every third person seems to be a tour guide, but the town retains the laid-back feel of a Mexican fishing port and prices are geared to the budget-minded.
Above, this rickety pier is one of two fronting the town's plaza. It's used mainly for excursion boats. A few hundred meters north of is the main fishing dock, well used by both enthusiasts and local fishermen.
Nobody minded me hanging around on the dock as the morning catch was brought in.
You'll be offered opportunities for snorkeling at $40US a pop by local touts. I decided to save my underwater bucks for one of the cayes off Belize. Swimming is free and the water is Caribbean-green. The beach, though, is rather barren, but I'm not one to linger in the sun. The Agua de Ojo hotel has umbrellas and chairs close to the water, but I'm guessing you would need to buy something from their menu.
Not much shade, either, in PM's breezy waterfront plaza. You'll find relief in one of the cafes and restaurants lining the adjacent streets. A very pleasant little place overall - a good relaxing start.
The new year is already knocking at the door, let it will bring only happiness and joy.
