Small but beautiful. In the lush tropical forest high above San Ignacio, an ancient Mayan site sits in splendid tranquility. Cahal Pech is small compared to the great ruins found elsewhere in Mesoamerica, but well worth the trip. I spent a couple of hours by myself in the late afternoon light, allowing the history to wash over me. I only saw four other visitors the whole time. There's a link to the left if you want to see a complete gallery of photos.
You can walk here from town but a better bet is to hire a taxi (5 Belizean Dollars) to take you up the steep hill and then walk down back to town. After the ruins, make your way about a hundred meters up the road to the Cahal Pech Hotel and have an umbrella drink at their posh poolside lounge. Here you'll find a magnificent view, in three directions, of the surrounding hills. The bartender kindly pointed out another Mayan ruin across the valley.
