A bad reputation. Guide books, fellow travelers and even Belizeans stress how dangerous and disorienting the country's capital is. Perhaps so, but hard to avoid if you're going overland, as Belize's three main highways converge here.
You can believe it if you like, as we can all agree that every city contains crime, poverty, pollution and large swaths of ugly, unchecked development. I had only a couple of hours between buses. Time enough, I suppose, to tempt fate carrying a largish camera around on the streets near the bus station.
I found no trouble. Just some nods, a few smiles - mostly indifference. A tropical city baking under a noonday sun.
